Vincent Poon :: Medina

Medina (the old city) is a distinct city section found in many North African cities. It is typically walled, with many narrow and maze-like streets. They were designed to confuse and slow down invaders (and tourists alike) because of how narrow and winding the alleys were.

A trip to a North African city is never complete if you don't go there to get lost or to haggle with the local merchants. Although not as lively as Marrakesh's and not as ancient or as massive as Fes', it still has its own unique character there.

Panoramic view of the Mosque and the Medina
On the way out we passed by what we thought was a nice restaurant
We entered from the east and left on the west side of the medina. Not sure what this kiosk has for sale, but it sure had many 'doors'

Even the post box has the famous Tunisian doors design
In order to buy some souvenirs before our departure, we came back to the same place on the next day, only to find out that today was Eid al-Adha, festival of sacrifice. The whole medina was empty!!
We only saw some families with their sheep in the Place de la Victorie
Eid al-Adha is the festival to commemorate the story that Abraham almost sacrificed his son to God. So nowadays the muslims will sacrifice these sheep on that day. I guess these kids were waving goodbye to their pets! Poor things!

We ventured further into the medina... not a single shop was opened... nor we met a single soul..
maybe except this little fellow, who sat here lazily...
