Vincent Poon :: Episode VI: The Return of the Weary Travellers

Day 3, after watching the sunrise in Ksar Ghilane, we drove out of the desert to the mountains. The scorching heat continued and we were also given a flat tyre before we reached Chenini the mountain village. Granaries came next though I must admit they were worth visiting. Last stop was in Matmata where we had lunch (at 1500) and also visited the underground Berber cave house. (a must for Star Wars fans)

The last part of the journey was a 6 hours drive all the way north to Sousse. The other jeep had the aircon broken so they were literally soaked. Oh and we missed the famous El-Jem because we got back home at around 2300!

You wouldn't see many inhabitants in this deserted village. Most have moved to Nouvelle Chenini
There were more animals than human in this place
It took us some time to spot one woman on the street...
Next to the cafe and the mosque there were many desert roses for sale. This bunch came at a price of 0.5 dinar each.

Desert Roses, a rose-like formation of crystal clusters, were found in abundance in Tunisia. These were 1 dinar each
These were 2 dinars each
These were 5 each. To be honest, I couldn't tell the difference
After the break, we went down to the bottom of the valley.

The view when we looked back up the mosque and the cafe (where the white gas tank was)
These were the granaries at the hilltop (even higher than the mosque), but too bad we didn't have time to check them out
On our way down we visited some of the deserted houses
The houses consists of a cave room, which had a fenced front courtyard containing one or two more rooms. The doors were made from palm trunk.
