Vincent Poon :: Episode V - The Desert Strikes Back!

To make up for the loss in the first day Pawel arranged a local expert to take us to the Camel Mountain and Mos Espa (Star Wars film location) at 6am; followed by a tour in the Palmeraie in Nefta. After that we continued our 2nd day itinerary to cross east through the saltless and waterless salt lake to arrive in Douz where we could have some thrilling action in the middle of the desert at 40C.

The afternoon was spent driving to Ksar Ghilane (100km deep in Sahara) where we were supposed  (but too late) to enjoy swimming in a natural lake and a night under the tent (together with the crying, howling and fighting sounds of unknown animals nearby)...Of course free heating  was always supplied....

Nothing was inside these dwellings..
Tunisian government has asked for help to maintain this area as it is continuously threatened by the wind and sand which has already buried 10% of the site.
Wandering around I spotted something interesting
This thing was a fenix fox that was very common in desert. Last time in Egypt we only saw their footprints as they only appeared at night to hunt.

Unfortunately, the locals would catch them and use them as photo opportunities for the tourists... poor thing! (I personally did not pay to encourage these kinds of acts)
This was another one tied up. With nothing else to do, I see that he has already dug himself a hole in the ground... again, poor thing!
Another wildlife that caught my attention. This bird was merrily walking along the desert when I spotted it.
I think the sand dunes here were a lot nicer than Douz's.

After visiting the two places, we finally returned to the hotel for breakfast. This is the name of the hotel.
They have already packed the breakfast for each person, from the first glance it looked like there was quite a lot... not even a boiled egg... *weep*
After breakfast we visited the town of Nefta for a carriage ride around the palmeraire. Unfortunately, one of the carriage was broken so we walked around the town a bit
This gas tank was for the bikes to refuel... these tanks could be found everywhere. This one was just outside the convenient store.
