Vincent Poon :: Monastery (Al-Deir)

After spending 40 minutes (and thousands of KJs) you will be awarded with a spectacular sight of one of the best monuments in Petra. The Monastery recently came under the spotlight after the movie Transformers: The revenge of the fallen was released. I personally think it is worth the time and energy of the climb. A must if you go to Petra!

The starting point of the trail to the Monastery, it says it is dangerous without a guide... I didn't feel that dangerous after all!
The road to the Monastery was steep and long...
If you can't make it, you can hire the donkeys to help you... but that means I had to watch out for them as well as their droppings...
... can't believe those monks who lived in the Monastery, everyday had to hike like that...

They say there are only about 800 steps, but I would not be bothered to count!
Hey this place looks familiar? Am I lost?
Just what you need when you are almost lost... now I am totally lost!
Finally there!. The Monastery is bigger and more impressive than the Treasury (50mx45m)

On the left are stairs that could bring you up to the top of the monastery and was now off-limits after someone fell from the top
You can climb inside, no, there are no transformers inside!
Inside of the monastery, again no transformers inside
