Vincent Poon :: Perast & Bay of Kotor

The Bay of Kotor is one of the most beautiful natural landforms found on the Adriatic coast. The spectacular, steep-sided inlet is often referred as the 'Mediterranean fjord'.

What makes this 'fjord' stand out is perhaps the two churches built on the two islets in the middle of the bay, near the old town of Perast.

This was our boat for our 2.5h tour to the Lady of the Rocks and Perast.
We departed from Kotor and cruised along the Bay of Kotor
Cruising the Bay of Kotor was actually like crusing inside a Fjord but technically it wasn't a fjord as it wasn't formed by glacier
On the way we passed through a couple of towns

Most of the towns have at least one church
As most of the bay area is surrounded by mountains, it is not usual to have settlements not built at sea level
After around 30 minutes at last we have reached our first stop, Our Lady of the Rocks and monastery of St. George
Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela) is an artifical island, which according to legend, was made over the centuries by local seamen who kept an ancient oath after finding the icon of Madonna and Child on the rock in the sea in 1452

Island of St. George (Ostrvo Sveti Đorđe) is a real island and contains the St. George Benedictine monastery, which is not open to the public
We docked at the far end of Our Lady of the Rocks where the lighthouse was at
Bust of Frano Alfirevi , Croatian poet, essayist , translator and travel writer. Although born in Zadar, he claimed he has the mentality of a Kotoranin.
From there we could get a good view of the town Perast
