Dr Deborah Beere, from Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust says, ¡§All of the clinics are busy throughout the year, but we see an increase before Christmas with people sorting out their contraception before clinics are closed over Christmas.

¡§There¡¦s lots of parties and sometimes if you¡¦ve had a few drinks you might not be as careful as you might be when you¡¦re sober.

¡§This scheme is already nationwide and it¡¦s obviously free already from clinics and GP¡¦s, but it¡¦s a definite improvement going to be free, as a lot of women can¡¦t afford to spend that mount of money.

¡§In 2004/5 we had 24,000 contacts for this service and 6% were for the emergency pill.

¡§There are high numbers of unplanned pregnancies for women if all ages and in the North East, we do have a higher rate than some other areas, so hopefully having the emergency contraception available from pharmacies for free will reduce this number.¡¨

Tony O¡¦Neill, a pharmacist from Boots, Middlesbrough says, ¡§We do sell quite a few so I¡¦d say the demand is there for it to be free.¡¨

So how do women who need the pill get it?

Deborah says, ¡§Women will need to answer various questions about when the unprotected sex occurred, some general health questions, and if they fulfil the criteria they will get it for free.¡¨

¡§We¡¦re also looking at the possibility that they¡¦ll also be provided with condoms too, which they can use until they can get to their GP for a more reliable method of contraception.¡¨
